In India, a factory owner signed a solar EPC quote today. The number is about Rs 20 lakh lower than the other bids. Six months have passed. The plant still waits for a DISCOM inspection. The steel frames have rust at the welds. The contractor who quoted cheaper is not reachable anymore. This kind of outcome shows up again and again.
For many buyers, the biggest regret comes from one simple choice. They picked the EPC firm based on the lowest price. Not every issue comes from that choice, but it often sets the tone for what follows. When the bid wins on cost alone, the risk tends to move into later steps. That is where delays and defects start to show.
The ground-mounted solar EPC space in India is large and growing fast. It now covers about 15 to 20 GW of annual installations. The market is valued near USD 8 to 12 billion in 2026. That is higher than the 10 to 12 GW that was seen as normal in 2023 to 2024, as per IndexBox. Utility scale additions are also forecast to rise. Growth is expected around a 19 percent CAGR through 2031. With this scale, both big and small EPC firms chase work. Some are tied to listed makers with their own EPC units. Others are newer and bid to build volume.
With more firms in the market, you might expect easier decisions. Yet the opposite can happen. Buyers can end up choosing a solar EPC partner that fails on delivery. The mistake then costs more than the initial savings.
This guide explains what makes a solar EPC company a solid pick. It also explains how to avoid firms that can drain time and money. The aim is to help you reach the output you were promised.
What a Solar EPC Company Actually Does
"EPC" is often used loosely, so it is worth being precise. A solar EPC company delivers your project under one contract across three distinct phases , and each phase carries a different risk.

Solar EPC delays do not happen by chance. In India, project reviews keep showing the same trouble spots. Permits are often not finished on time. DISCOM approvals and net-metering steps do not get lined up well. Transformer size can be wrong for what the system needs. Handoffs also break down between civil work, electrical work, and commissioning.

EPC vs. In-House Build vs. the PPA Model
Make sure EPC is actually the fit before you compare EPC providers.
If you want a full EPC deal, you get one contractor handling design, sourcing, and construction. You also get one party to point to if something goes wrong. This is often the easiest option for buyers who do not have solar staff in-house.
Another path is an in-house build with vendor sourcing. You lead the design and purchasing yourself. Then you bring in outside specialists for each part of the work. This can help with cost, but you end up owning the schedule and coordination problems.
There is also the developer-owned and PPA approach. In this setup, a developer builds the plant, holds the asset, and runs it. You buy the electricity through a long-term power purchase agreement. There is no upfront capital from you, and execution risk shifts away from you too. The tradeoff is that you do not own the asset.
Most industrial and commercial buyers still pick full EPC. The reason is simple. Procurement teams usually like a single vendor. It is easier than managing multiple parties at once.
Seven Criteria That Actually Predict a Good EPC Partner
Financial stability: Your system is expected to run with a warranty promise for 20 to 25 years. If the contractor is shaky, you may find they are gone by year twelve, or they cannot back the deal.
Component sourcing transparency: By 2026, BIS certification is required for solar PV modules under IS 14286 and for grid-interactive inverters under IS 16221. Check the contractor’s default brands. Confirm they are BIS-certified. Also confirm ALMM listing where it applies. Then ask if you can name other approved options.
In-house structural and electrical engineering: Some contractors farm out the full design. That often results in a standard plan that does not fit your site well. When the work is done in-house, the mounting setup and cable routing are more likely to match your wind load, ground type, and shading.
Track record on similar work: A firm that has done many 500 kW rooftops does not always handle a 20 MW ground plant well. The reverse can also be true. Ask for references that match your size and your site type, not just any project.
Warranty structure and what is passed through: Get the terms in writing, and keep the lines clear. Separate the manufacturer’s warranty for the product and performance from the EPC’s warranty for workmanship. These are not the same in claims and responsibility.
O and M capability and fault response: Ask what fault response time they commit to. Ask what is included in O and M. Clarify if it is part of the contract, a paid add-on, or handled by another company. Poor O&M can stay quiet for a while, then it shows up later in the yearly generation numbers.
Documentation and commissioning discipline: You want clean as-built drawings, proper test certificates, and a clear commissioning report. That kind of handover makes later service, expansion, or resale much simpler than a handover with a mixed folder and missing items.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Sign
What does the performance guarantee say, and what do we do in the agreement if the plant misses the target?
If a module or inverter fails during the warranty period, who takes responsibility in writing, the EPC or the original maker?
What is the promised schedule from contract signing to commissioning, and what fee or remedy shows up if work slips?
Is O and M part of the main contract price, or does it appear as a separate yearly charge?
Who handles DISCOM talks and the net metering approvals, and is that work listed in the scope of services?
A contractor who states clear terms for each item, not vague comfort, is usually the safer option.
Why "Top EPC Company" Rankings Only Tell Half the Story
Most rankings sort EPC companies by installed capacity or years in operation, and those are fair proxies for scale. But scale is not the same as fit. A large national EPC managing gigawatt-scale utility tenders may not prioritize your 500 kW rooftop project the way a focused regional specialist would. Treat size as one input among the seven criteria above, never the deciding one on its own.
